Sumo wrestlers. Kusakabe Kimbei (Japanese, 1841 - 1934). Taken c. 1870s - 1890s. Hand-colored albumen silver print. Professional sumo roots trace back to the 1600s in Japan. The original wrestlers were probably samurai without masters, who needed to find an alternative form of income. Current professional sumo tournaments began in the Tomioka Hachiman Shrine in 1684.
