Reportedly at wife Pauline's insistence, author Ernest Hemingway built Key West's first swimming pool behind his home at 907 Whitehead Street in the late 1930s. It cost $20, 000 and Hemingway set a penny in the wet cement upon completion, stating, "Here, take the last penny I've got." Key West, Florida, USA
