Sand dunes are a favorite subject for landscape photographers who taking advantage of low-angled or "oblique" light. Early morning and late afternoon sun casts shadows on the unique windswept ridges, making texture and dimension more visible than when viewed under the overhead light of mid-day sun. The gypsum sand of New Mexico offers the added benefit of reflecting the color of the sky, making the dune fields a magical display of color during sunrise and sunset.
