Darius the Great Darayawush . 549 BC– 486/485 BC Old Persian Dārayawuš was the son of Hystaspes, and Persian Emperor from 521 BC to 486/485 BC. His name in Modern Persian is Dâryûsh, in Hebrew Daryawesh and the ancient Greek sources call him Dareios. Darius was the Latin spelling used by ancient Roman historians. Darius on a Greek vaseDarius in his inscriptions appears as a fervent believer in the Dualistic religion of Zoroaster. He was also a great statesman and organizer. Darius thoroughly revised the Persian system of administration and also the legal code. His revisions of the legal code revolved around laws of evidence, slave sales, deposits, bribery, and assault.

Shown here is part of the relief frieze in colored glazed tile from the Audience Hall (known as the apadana) of the royal palace at Susa (in present-day Iran). The figures represent members of the powerful royal bodyguard of a Persian king around 400 B.C. , the time of Darius I, who invaded Greece and started what is known today as the Persian Wars (the Greeks being the victors). Darius I built the palace. This relief is now housed in the Louvre in Paris, France.
