PICTURE CREDIT DOUG BLANE The Ardington and Lockinge Millennium Sundial and Solar System stone circle and woodland Oxfordshire The Millennium sundial consists of thirteen pairs of standing stones arranged in a semi circle As the day progresses shafts of light shine between each pair in turn By using the graph on the central pair Greenwich Mean Time can be calculated The standing stones are Purbeck stone from the Jurassic period formed between 130 140 million years ago Behind the middle Noon pair of stones markers are set into the ground indicating the Summer and Winter Solstice and the Spring and Autumn Equinox The Planetary model of the solar system is set into the ground Around the Sun are the nine planets of the solar system Each planet has been placed in it s position for January the 1st 2000 Because of the complexity of the planets orbits and the vastness of the Solar System the scales of the model have been adapted GeoCache grid reference N51 35 433 W1 23 118 the large stone with a plaque describing the sundial and solar system Nikon D200
