In the Edo period, unlike some other performing arts, ningyo joruri, or puppet drama was one form of entertainment open to the general public. In Tokushima, presentations of puppet dramas took place at the Jurobe Yashiki residence, which was famous for the large-sized puppets used. The drama based on the life of an actual person, Jurobe became popular though the story was slightly different from the real history.
