Santiago de Cuba is the second city of Cuba on the south east coast , based around a deep water bay. The city was established in 1515 by Diego Velazquez de Cuellar, In 1898 Santiago was the centre of a war of independence against the Spanish and this was here the U.S.A intervened with Teddy Rooseveldt’s Rough Riders. Santiago played a prime role in the 1950’s in the uprisings against the Baptista government. Fidel Castro chose Santiago for his debut battle in 1953 when he and a small band of supporters attacked the Moncada barracks. Whilst the attack was ultimately unsuccessful and Castro and his band captured and imprisoned it set him on the path to leadership of the revolution that was to come. Bullet holes can be seen on the front of the building.
