The name comes from the Latin 'indium', meaning violet or indigo. A soft, silvery metal that is stable in air and water. Image shows a detail of an old style mainly black and white periodic table used in a UK school (more modern tables are in multiple colours and/or have images and other element details. This is a real, school-used periodic table hence the folds and creases visible in the image. Each element is in a black box showing the chemical symbol (centre letter(s)), the atomic number above the letters in red and the atomic mass (normal in whole numbers) below the letters in black.
