More information:

Colchester was the first Roman capital of Britain, and the castle, constructed towards the end of the 11th century, is largely built from materials salvaged from the surrounding Roman remains. The Norman baron Eudo Dapifer started construction of the castle in 1076 and it was built around the podium of the Roman Temple of Claudius, creating the largest Norman keep in Britain. It now houses an award winning museum, with many exhibits about the Roman history of Colchester, and the surrounding land is a park open to the public.
