The sculpture, by James Earle Fraser, depicts Theodore Roosevelt on horseback, with an Indigenous person standing to his right and an African man standing to his left. The pyramid-like arrangement of the three figures implies a hierarchy of a white man on top with the persons of color subordinate. In June 2020, the Museum had made the decision to remove the statue because of the "hierarchial composition" as mentioned in the New York Times article "Roosevelt Statue to Be Removed From Museum of Natural History" June 21, 2020.
