The figures represented here are all English people from the 1600s. They are, from left to right: Charles I, three soldiers, chancellor, a nobleman. Charles I was king of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1625 until his execution in 1649. He was a Stuart and the second son of James VI of Scotland. The illustration dates to 1882.
