The Fort Gaines entrance is pictured looking toward the sally port, Aug. 12, 2021, in Dauphin Island, Alabama. Original plans for the fort included a drawbridge. The siege of Fort Gaines occurred during the American Civil War. Confederate troops surrendered the fort to the Union on Aug. 8, 1864.
