Just outside the village of Hillsborough in County Down, Northern Ireland is a historic fort built in 1630 sited on one side of a walled enclosure in the town's Forest Park; opposite if the Gothic gatehouse. William of Orange spent several nights there on his way south to his victory at the Boyne in 1690. In 1758, the fort was was replaced by a charming Gothic garden house, that followed the common practice of the upper classes to continue to called the residential mock castle a fort or castle to emphasise the antiquity of the family.
