The gravesite of Union Sgt. Benjamin Levy, the first Jewish American to receive the Medal of Honor Medal of Honor for actions in the Civil War while serving with New York’s 1st Volunteer Infantry Regiment, at his burial site at Cypress Hills Cemetery in Brooklyn, N.Y. A New York Army National Guard color guard, Jewish Chaplain and ceremony speaker joined with the Jewish Community Center Association of North America and the Jewish Welfare Board Jewish Chaplains Council to commemorate Levy’s service May 21, 2021.
