George Orwell lived in Wallington between 1936 and 1940 and although not started until he was living in London in 1943, 'Animal Farm' (Manor Farm, Willingdon) is a thinly disguised Manor Farm, Wallington. However. some of the features of the farm that Orwell describes lead some to say that the 'Manor Farm' of the book was an amalgam of Manor Farm and Bury Farm close by. The 'Great Barn' is where many of the animals' meetings were held in the novel.
