Hangzhou police have attempted to soothe public anger over the death of a pedestrian at the hands of a wealthy driver by vowing to handle the case according to the letter of the law. The suspect, 20-year-old Hu Bin, was driving his red Mitsubishi sports car in a downtown area of Zhejiangs provincial capital on 7 May 2009 when he hit and killed 25-year-old man Tan Zhuo at a zebra crossing, Xinhua reported. Chinese netizens became outraged, however, when further details of the case emerged. Witnesses told local media that Tan was bounced 5 metres into the air before landing on the ground 20 metres away. Police claimed the suspect was driving at 70km/h, just 20km/h over the speed limit. Concerns were heightened by photos of Mr Hus seemingly blase attitude after the incident. Tans death provoked sympathy and anger from the public. Xinhua reported that hundreds of people gathered at the scene to mourn Tan, while newspaper Qianjiang Evening News said about 1, 000 people had attended his funeral on Sunday (10 May 2009). Students at Zhejiang University signed a petition to the mayor calling for a fair trial and action to prevent a similar incident.
