The Ord North Chambered Cairn, Lairg, Dornoch, Sutherland, Scotland, UKMore information:
The Ord North Neolithic chambered tomb, Sutherland, Scotland, UK, looking NW to the forecourt & entrance passage; Loch Shin to rear. The round cairn, c 27m across with short horns, was excavated in 1967 by Dr John Corcoran then filled in again for safety reasons; lintel slabs of the entrance passage are still visible. The passage led from a shallow forecourt to a polygonal antechamber & then a larger polygonal chamber with a corbelled roof some 3m high. Cremation burials, Neolithic potsherds (including an almost complete Unstan bowl), flints & a decorated bone mount were found. Earlier inhumations may have rotted away. The tomb was ritually sealed in prehistory when a stone platform with a boulder kerb was built around it. The exposed chamber of Ord South is on the summit of Ord Hill & hut circles are scattered across the area.
