King Charles I arrived at the Kings Head Southwell on the 5th May 1646, disguised as a clergyman, after his defeat at Oxford. King Charles I surrendered to the Scottish Covenanters at Southwell, Nottinghamshire on the 5th May, who then handed him over to Parliament. The first Civil War had ended with a victory for Parliament. The English Civil War lasted from 22 August 1642 to 3rd September 1651. See the blue plaque, Alamy Ref number R1WMEJ.
