Scalesia contains fifteen species, family Asteraceae, endemic to the Galapagos Islands (San Cristobal, Santa Cruz, Santiago and Floreana), examples of adaptive radiation, "the Darwin's finches of the plant world". Scalesia pedunculata grows in dense woodlands in highland areas. The 15-20m tall trees die after very dry or wet period about every 15 years, and then a new generation of seedlings grow in the same place.
