More information:

The swollen foot of a patient with gout, also known as uric acid arthropathy, a rheumatic complaint that usually attacks a single joint at a time. In this condition sodium urate crystals are deposited on the articular cartilage of joints and in particular tissue like tendons. This provokes an inflammatory reaction of these tissues. These deposits often increase in size and burst through the skin to form sinuses discharging a chalky white material. The big toe is the joint most commonly affected, also known as podagra.
