Karate is a form of martial arts that Originated in Japan. It originated in the Ryukyu Kingdom from a blend of the indigenous Ryukyuan martial arts and the influence of Chinese Kung Fu. It has evolved into a striking art using punching, kicking, knee strikes, elbow strikes and open-hand techniques such as knife-hands, spear-hands, and palm-heel strikes. It is traditionally taught in a dōjō, which is a hall or space for immersive learning or training in the martial arts. The name dojo is a literal translation from Japanese that translates to English as "place of the Way". Karate is learned and practiced in a uniform called a Gi or Karategi that is traditionally made of cotton canvas.
