This illustration of Pope Sixtus V is from an engraving in the Prints and Drawings section in Berlin. Pope Sixtus V or Xystus V was born Felice Piergentile. He was Pope of the Catholic Church from 24 April 1585 to his death in 1590. He is best known for his contribution to embryology. He published the papal bull titled “Effraenatam” in 1588. The bull was later revoked by Pope Gregory XIV in 1591.
