The United States Penitentiary, Thomson (USP Thomson), formerly the Thomson Correctional Center in Thomson, Illinois. The facility was originally built by the State of Illinois as the Thomson Correctional Center, being completed in 2001 however it remained empty. It was purchased from the state by the federal government via the Bureau of Prisons in 2012. It was originally planned to transfer detainees from Guantanamo Bay to the facility but that was blocked by Congress. The prison is now a fully functioning, high security federal prison.
