Toe amputations in diabetes. Frontal X-ray of the feet of a 69-year-old patient with diabetes whose has had toes amputated due to circulatory problems. All the toes of the right foot (left) were amputated, as well as the big toe of the left foot (right). Diabetics often develop ulcers on the feet due to inadequate blood supply or neuropathy (nerve damage) caused by the disease. In severe cases, the ulcers can become gangrenous necessitating removal of the affected region.
