The wooden cenotaph was donated to the Shrine by the Ayyubid sultan Saladin (Salal al-Din) and carved by 'Ubayd al-Najjar ibn Ma'ali in 1178-9. The mausoleum was built in 1211. Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafi'i (Imam al-Shafi'i) was the founder of one of the four major legal rites in Islam. He died in 820. This mausoleum was built in 1211 by al-Malik al-Kamil, the brother of the ruling Ayyubid sultan al-'Adil.
