Tuberculosis research. Test tubes being used to culture tuberculosis (TB) bacteria (Mycobacterium tuberculosis). These bacteria infect the lung, and can cause severe scarring. Drugs can be tested on these cultures, and drug-resistant strains can also be identified. Drug-resistant TB is a major worldwide health concern, requiring research to find new drugs that are capable of treating such drug-resistant strains. Photographed in the Pedro Kouri Institute, Havana, Cuba, in 2002.
