Twisted bowel. Light micrograph of a section through bowel tissue following volvulus, the twisting of the bowel. Here, the twisting of the intestine has resulted in an infarction (deep pink tissue at left). An infarction is tissue death (necrosis) caused by a complete blockage of the blood supply (ischaemia). This can lead to gangrene (decay), therefore requiring emergency surgery.
