Uma Balde from the village of Dembel Jumpora in the West African country of Guinea Bissau harvests rice. The women in this culture do all of the labor intensive agricultural work while the men are expected to tend to the cows. Guinea Bissau is ranked as one of the poorest nations in the world and has just emerged from a civil war but still village life has remained unchanged. (Photo by Ami Vitale)
