U.S. Marines conduct a site survey to assemble an M-31 arresting gear at Clark Air Base, Philippines, March 19, 2019, in preparation for Exercise Balikatan. An M-31 arresting gear can hook various tail-hook aircraft to rapidly decelerate aircraft as it lands. Balikatan is an annual exercise between the U.S. and the Philippines and comes from a Tagalog phrase meaning "shoulder-to-shoulder," representing the partnership between the two countries. The Marines are expeditionary airfield systems technicians with Marine Wing Support Squadron 171.
