U.S. Soldier holds the needs of a “Tunnel Rat;” 38 caliber pistol with silencer to prevent damage to ear drums underground and a strong flashlight in January 1967. SP-4 Franklin Short of Albuquerque, N.M., used them as he probed labyrinth of underground shaft in the Hobo Woods. The complex was believed to have been headquarters for the Viet Cong’s fourth Military Region which includes Saigon. Short is with 25th Infantry Division’s 5th mechanized Infantry which is working with the 196th Light Inf. Brigade in the tunnels. (AP Photo)
