Vanadium nitrogenase molecule. Computer illustration showing the structure of a vanadium nitrogenase molecule with the homocitrate cofactor (spheres) in the active site. Nitrogenases are enzymes produced by certain bacteria that are key for the process of nitrogen fixation. They catalyse the reduction of dinitrogen (N2) gas to ammonium at a complex heterometallic cofactor. The reaction occurs at the FeV cofactor (FeVco) with the aid of homocitrate and carbonate ion.
