View SSE of the Leete Path riverside walk through the Alyn Gorge, Flintshire, Wales, UK, with River Alyn to R, former leat (cut water-course) to L. The C19th leat carried water from the River Alyn at Loggerheads, Denbighshire, northwards along the E side of the river to power water-wheels 3 miles downstream at the Pen-y-Fron lead mine, Rhydmwyn, Flintshire. The river flows to Rhydmwyn, but often disappears underground through swallow holes in the limestone river bed. The leat was dug & blasted from the rock in 1824 by a Cornish engineer to provide a reliable supply of water to power the pumps which drained the mines.
