An Omani refreshes himself with cool water issuing from a cleft in the rock in the narrow mountain valley of Wadi Bani Kharus. Water from such springs flows by gravity through a series of canals and channels, called aflaj (singular, falaj), to terraced gardens farther down the mountain valley.
