The Leamside Line, from Pelaw to Tursdale in Co. Durham, was closed in the 1990s. Since that time various attempts have been made to have it reopened. Proposals see it as an alternative route to the east coast mainline and/or to allow an extension of the Tyneside Metro to serve Washington, one of the largest towns in the country not served by a railway.
