William Mannering, who stars as the prince, in Divine Right, by republican playwright Peter Whelan, which premieres at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre on April 19. Tory MP Warren Hawksley has attacked the play, which shows a future king abdicating and his troubled son travelling in disguise through Britain, as politically motivated and complained that Birmingham Repertory Theatre Company, which receives public funding, should stage more orthodox productions.
