French offensive of May 9 was aimed at the liberation of the northern cities. Foch, who led the operation, had assembled a maneuvering mass of ten divisions and a powerful artillery. In an hour and a half, the mation of the 9th, the 33rd corps, commanded by Petain, had crossed 4 kilometers and reached the heights of Vimy. The French breakthrough was successful, but French reinforcements were slow, while the Geman reinforcements arrived in time.
