Head anatomy. Computer anatomy of a sagittal section through the human head showing the brains, muscles, nerves and bones. The curved grey and pink structure at centre of the brain is the cingulate gyrus, part of the brain's limbic system, a primitive part of the brain involved in emotions, learning and the formation of memories. It surrounds the putamen (oval), which regulates movements and influences learning. At lower right is the cerebellum (striped), which controls muscle coordination and balance. To its left is the brainstem, which controls automatic functions, sleep and arousal and relays messages from the brain to the spinal cord (yellow, bottom), which is encased in the spine.
