"Anti-fascist campaigners still gathered in Manchester city centre on Saturday afternoon despite the right-wing group North West Infidels cancelling a planned protest in the city. The far-right group moved their event to Liverpool at the last minute - leaving their Manchester opponents claiming victory. Around 40 campaigners had planned to host a counter-protest but a peaceful event campaigning for equality took place at Piccadilly Gardens instead. Participants held placards welcoming refugees to the city centre, while speakers from Stand up to Racism, Unite Against Fascism, junior doctors and LGBT Support Refugees and Migrants. Nahella Ashraf, convenor for Stand up to Racism, said: “I think it is terrible that the North West Infidels tried to march through our streets as if they had support in our city. “It is important to have an alternative voice and celebrate diversity. “I think it is a great victory they did not come here.” Another campaigner, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: “They stand for everything that I am against and I wanted to stand here to show support with my Muslim comrades and other comrades to tell them they are not welcome and they do not speak for me. “It is a victory that they have been to scared to come back to Manchester.” The North West Infidels posted a message on Facebook yesterday informing the Manchester event was a ‘red herring’. ProtestErs were expected to gather at Williamson Square in Liverpool this afternoon. According to the group’s original post, the event today aims to exercise their ‘democratic rights to freedom of expression, speech, movement and assembly’." Source Manchester Evening News.
