Archive 1900s Travel Image Ocean Liner People passengers on deck in 'steerage class' on deck of ocean liner 1900's Bain News Service. Steerage is the lower deck of a ship, where cargo is stored above the closed hold. In the late 19th and early 20th century, steamship steerage decks were used to provide the lowest cost and lowest class of travel, often for European and Chinese immigrants to North America. With limited privacy and security, inadequate sanitary conditions, and poor food, steerage was often decried as inhumane, and was eventually replaced on ocean liners with third-class cabins. Japan: A 19th century Japanese map of Nagasaki harbour showing Dejima Island linked to the mainland by a bridge. Ships flying the Dutch flag are anchored in the harbour. North is to the top right. Dejima (literally 'exit island'; Dutch: Desjima or Deshima, sometimes latinised as Decima or Dezima) was a small fan-shaped artificial island built in the bay of Nagasaki in 1634. This island, which was formed by digging a canal through a small peninsula, remained as the single place of direct trade and exchange between Japan and the outside world during the Edo period.
