China: Celestial beings and a church ceremony. Fragments of a Manichaean painting from Turfan, Xinjiang, c. 8th-9th century. Manichaeism was the most important Gnostic religion. Central in the Manichaean teaching was dualism, that the world itself, and all creatures, were part of a battle between the good, represented by God, and the bad, the darkness, represented by a power driven by envy and lust. Manichaeism spread over most of the known world of the 1st millennium CE, from Spain to China. But the religion disappeared in the 14th century and is now extinct. This print showing Rama's Marriage dates to 1913. According to the Ramayana, Lord Shiva had gifted a celestial bow to King Janaka of Mithila. King Janaka set the condition that he would marry his daughter Sita to the person who would be able to string Pinaka, the bow of Lord Shiva. In the assembly of the court of King Janaka, Rama effortlessly lifted the bow and stringed it, and then, stretching the bowstring to examine its tautness, Rama unintentionally broke the bow, the sound of its breaking resounded like thunder and the earth trembled. Seated Amitabha, late 1500s-early 1600s. This magnificent Buddha, called Amitabha (literally, "infinite light") is seated on a lotus pedestal with both palms facing up over crossed legs, suggesting that it is in a deep meditation. Originally, this scroll was acquired by the museum as a Korean work, but has now been reattributed as Ming period Chinese. One of the major reasons for this reattribution is that contemporaneous Korean works mostly depict this deity giving a sermon, surrounded by a large retinue of Buddhist guardians and celestial beings, rather than meditating.
