Nelson's monument, in the crypt of St Paul's Cathedral, London, 19th century. By Arthur Robertson. Lord Nelson (1758-1805) was killed in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 and buried in St Paul's after a state funeral. He was laid to rest in a coffin made from the timber of a French ship he defeated in battle. The black marble sarcophagus that adorns his tomb was originally made for Cardinal Wolsey, Lord Chancellor but after Wolsey's fall from favour, it remained unused at Windsor until a suitable recipient could be found. The Battle of Trafalgar 21st October 1805, In which Admiral Nelson's Fleet fought the combined fleets of the Spanish and French Navies during the War of the Third Coalition. The Spanish fleets under French Admiral Villeneuve encountered the British fleet recently assembled to meet this threat, in the Atlantic Ocean along the southwest coast of Spain, off Cape Trafalgar. Admiral Villeneuve was uncertain about engaging the British, and the Franco-Spanish fleet failed to organise fully. In contrast, Nelson was decisive, directing the British fleet into two columns decimating the enemy.
