An old engraving of a steam crane on rails at work at the docks on the River Tees at Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, England, UK the 1800s. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The port of Middlesbrough can be traced back to 1830, when an extension of the Stockton and Darlington Railway was opened to deliver coal from the Durham coalfields to the riverside. It was so successful that work began on a new facility in 1839 and this was Middlesbrough Dock which opened in 1842 enabling the export of steel as shown here with this elevated, mobile crane lifting up a girder. An old engraving showing the workings of a side-wheeler paddle steamer. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. This version is the North River Steamboat (or the ‘Clermont’). It is widely regarded as the world's first vessel to succeed in the use of steam propulsion for commercial water transportation. She was built in 1807 by inventor and entrepreneur Robert Fulton (1765–1815). It operated on the Hudson River – at that time often known as the North River – between New York City and Albany, New York, USA. A paddle steamer is a steamship or steamboat powered by steam. RMB5B69N–'Goethe' last paddle steamer on the Rhine during the last days of service under steam, near Lahnstein, on a foggy morning.
An old engraving of the launching of the Great Eastern, on the River Thames, London, England, UK in 1858. It is from a Victorian history book of c.1900. SS Great Eastern was an iron sail-powered, paddle wheel and screw-propelled steamship designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and built by John Scott Russell & Co. at Millwall Iron Works. She was by far the largest ship ever built at the time of her launch. High winds prevented the ship from being launched on the high tide of 30 January 1858, but the next morning a fresh attempt successfully launched the ship. An old engraving showing Bishop’s floating derrick c.1850. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. In this illustration the massive steam-powered derrick is lifting another ship. It was a flat-bottomed boat, built by the Thames Iron Shipbuilding Company of Blackwall, London, England, UK to raise sunken ships. It was 270 feet in length and had a 90-foot beam. Watertight compartments could be filled with seawater to counterbalance any weight on the opposite side of the vessel when lifting. Derricks mounted on dedicated vessels are also known as sheerlegs.
