Scottish Olympic athlete Eric Liddell winning the British Empire vs. USA 1-mile relay at the International Athletics Meeting held at Stamford Bridge, London on Saturday, July 19, 1924 following the Paris Olympics. Due to personal convictions of his Christian faith, Liddell famously refused to run his favored 100 meters in the 1924 Olympics because the race was held on a Sunday. He instead competed in the 400 meter race, which he won. In 1925 Liddell returned to China (where he was born) and served as a missionary there until his death in 1945 in a Japanese civilian internment camp.
