MONSTERS - DRAGON OF WANTLEY Wood-engraved copy of the Dragon of Wantley from the broadsheet, An Excellent Ballad of that most Dreadful Combate fought Between Moore of Moore Hall, and the Dragon of Wantley. Wantley seems to be a corruption of Wharncliffe, near Sheffield. The myth of the dragon seems to be built around the personality and ambitions of the landlord, Sir Thomas Wortley, who, in his fondness for hunting, threw tenants of his land, 'eating up houses and churches, people and cattle', in the process.
